Of course, before purchased, I spent time Online researching the piano. One of the things I wanted to know was if the Arius YDP-142 was going to work with GarageBand.

There were no results on Google or at least there was nothing helpful regarding my question. Not a big deal though. The primary purpose of the piano is a practice and learning instrument for the kid.

After we got the piano, I hooked it up to the Mac Mini and it turns out it works just fine as a MIDI controller. I was still irritated that I could not find one single article Online to answer my simple question. I thought, 'Someone ought to post something Online stating that the Yamaha Arius works with GarageBand. It's easy. Why doesn't someone just do that?' Then I remembered. 'Oh yeah. I have a blog.' So here we go.

The Yamaha Arius YDP-142 has a USB port underneath the keyboard called the 'USB TO HOST' terminal. You will need a standard USB A-B cable to connect to the computer. I powered on the piano, launched GarageBand and everything worked fine. No extra drivers or anything.

Here are some detail about my setup:

  1. Computer: Mac mini (Mid 2011)
  2. OS: OS X Yosemite 10.10.5
  3. GarageBand Version: GarageBand 6.0.5
